FIRST OPENLY GAY RALLY TEAM ENTERS THE FIREBALL RUN TRANSCONTINENTAL RALLY
ORLANDO, Florida- It all started with a press release from Fireball Run organizer J "JJ" Sanchez, all-calling minority entrants and stressing diversity. Prompting a call from GayWheels.com Founder Joe LaMuraglia "I read it- couldn't believe it- then had to confirm it." Said Joe "I asked if he was for real and would they openly welcome a gay rally team." J's answer, "Yes."
J. Sanchez knows all about diversity, he is the first Hispanic as well as Generation X Chairman the Orlando Regional Small Business Chamber. "Diversity plays an important role in our community and it should be the same for the motor sports community." Joe requested one of the few remaining entries in the all invitational event. Good on his word J. Sanchez accepted Joe's application and the first openly gay rally team officially registered July 3rd 2007.
No. 17, team "G.L.A.M." enters with the support of several major sponsors. The team consists of Atlanta based GayWheels.com CEO Joe LaMuraglia and SCCA division Champion Evan Darling of Miami, who recently placed 7th in a Grand Am Cup race. "I can't wait to get started and rip on the race tracks" said Evan who has raced for 14 years.
Never one to shy away from risk, J. Sanchez, an avid rally driver himself, served in the Air Force and has owned several companies. Now the entrepreneur enters the business of rally sport. "The Fireball Run is different. We look for character and class, both of which are found in every demographic- you simply make it clear they are welcome." J continued "Fireball Run is above labels and prejudices. Our players are worldlier, more sophisticated, and welcoming."
The Fireball Run is an annual 100 team Orlando to Los Angeles adventure rally. The invitational has attracted teams from around the world to play the 3500 mile nine day adventure game. Other notable entries include an all women Bentley Team, a 1960's Batmobile, a team of Orlando firefighters, a $750,000.00 coach, and the actual ambulance used in the 1980 hit film "The Cannonball Run".
